INGLORIOUS END.
OPUNAKE WHARF. £55,000 HARBOUR NEVER USED STRUCTURE NOW UNSAFE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) KEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The harbour works at Opunake, erected with a loan of £55,000, which was raised after a keen controversy a few years ago, have not been used for cargo working by a single ship. Now the wharf is to be dismantled, and the material sold.
The seaward end of the wharf is swaying dangerously in heavy weather, according to a report submitted to the Gpunake Harbour Board, and it is in imminent danger of collapse. The board agreed to erect notices warning fishermen and children that the structure is unsafe, and to. call tenders for dismantling. This is the inglorious end of a work which was supported by a section of ratepayers who had high hopes of Opunako becoming the port for the Cape Egmont district. Though not a ton of cargo has crossed the wharf, the ratepayers have had to bear the burden of its cost for some years, and apparently will have to continue to do so.
A speaker said the other day that it would be better for the country if racehorses were* exterminated. A dead cert at last!
