CULT OF BEAUTY.

WHAT MAKES PERSONALITY THE MESSAGE OF THE EYE. (By A BEAUTY SPECIALIST.) If woman but knew it, there lies in her eyes her most effective yet her most subtle weapon of fascinating. The eyes are always speaking. What they say depends upon the woman (or man). If tho eyes have tieen allowed to speak without control, they express the unguarded thought and the unbridled emotion. If they have not been trained to bespeak qualities, physical and psychic, they are beautiful and attractive; if they have not been disciplined into communicating the countless shades of thought and meaning of which they are capable, then one has lost or neglected a most effective source of power and charm. A look may wreck a life or a home, or open the gates of Paradise. In an unguarded moment one may reveal in a lightning flash of the eye a long sup-

it dilates and contracts involuntarily and to an appreciable degree, according to the emotions, as well as light changes. A dilated pupil darkens the eyes and makes it appear larger. All light-hearted emotions and active interest in everything that makes up life dilates the pupil, thereby enhancing the beauty of the eye. Worry and a drab outlook upon life contracts the pupil and reduces the "life" of the eye. The deeper and more intense the feelings, and the more joyoue the spirit, the "blacker" the pupil, and the brighter the eye. Sparkle or lustre of eyes Is chiefly a feminine characteristic. The brilliance depends upon the amount of lubricating fluid of the eye—the fluid that in excess becomes tears. Eyes that scintillate are faseinating in women. They usually betoken a love of excitement, of "life," quick wit, and ready speech, if only of trivial things. They often are mischievous eyes, the "come-hither" eyes, the eyes that have "it," and laughter and excitement heighten their brilliance. The movement of the eye has much to do with its brilliance. And it is the way the eyes are moved that makes them say little or much that makes little or much of their beauty. Rapid-fire glances and dull, vacant stares are equally unattractive, reveal undesirable mental qualities, and constant winking is a trait only of . erratic or nervous people. The eye of the wide-awake intellect, of the truly sympathetic, and of interest in more than the surface of peoples and things, moves easily, reasonably, quickly, glows with understanding, even of words unspoken. |

Wβ have learned the value of expressive eyes. And beautiful eyes are the most expressive. What can be done to develop beautiful eyes, or to keep them beautiful? Some undesirable conditions cannot be corrected, as they depend upon congenital and inherited provisions. But a surprising improvement in the appearance of the eyes is possible, even agreeable changes in unattractive eyes.

The first requisite is good health. Everything that affects the physical health, the blood and the nervous system, affects the eyes in the same direction. Hygienic habits of living and thinking are absolutely necessary if the eyes are to be fascinating, expressive. Do not rub the eyes.
