INTER-CLUB DEBATES.
ATHENAEUM CUP CONTESTS. THE LEADING TEAMS. There are eight more debates to be held in the Athenaeum Cup contest before the winners of section 1 meet the winners of section 2. So far there arc three teams equal in section 1, the Fabian Club, Papatoetoe and the Leys Institute. The Nomads are leading in section 2. The deciding debate between the two sections will be on the motion, "That the Problem of the Pacific is Economic Bather Than Racial," and will be held about October 26. Last evening the Fabian Club successfully affirmed "That Poverty and Unemployment Demonstrate the Failure of Capitalism" against St. John's College. The winning team comprised Mrs. J. Boswell and Messrs. W. F. Anderton and C. E. Boswell. St. John's was represented by Messrs. A. P. Blair, E. T. Sagar and T. A. M. Curnow. Mr. H. E. Barrowdough acted as judge, and awarded the Fabian Club IS2 points to 175. "That the Abolition of Slavery was Due to Economic Rather Than Moral Causes" was debated by the YV.E.A. and Tamariki Clubs at the Leys Institute last evening. The W.E.A., represented by Miss Una Moore and Messrs. J. S. Stewart and B. Martin, took the affirmative, and was awarded the decision by the judge, Mr. T. B. Slipper, by 204 points to 265? Tamariki was represented by Messrs. D. Martin, X. Douglas and F. E. Martin. The Y.M.C.A. will meet the Nomads this evening at the Y.M.C.A., to debate the motion, "That Oliver Cromwell's Character is Worthy of Admiration."
