AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. RECORD FOR THE COURSE. N.Z. GIRL LEADS FIELD BY TEX. MELBOURNE, August 31. In the first of the qualifying rounds of the women's golf championship of Australia played the scores were: —Mrs. A. Russell (Victoria), 7S; Miss J. Hammond (New South Wales), SO; Miss Olive Kay (New Zealand), 82; Miss O. Lefebvre (New South Wales), S3; Miss Keraot (Victoria), 84; Miss Gaisford (New Zealand), 84; Mrs. H. Dodgshun (New Zealand), 87; Mrs. J. C. Templer (New Zealand), 93. Miss Kay was hitting particularly well, and seemed more at home in extricating herself from bunkers. Miss Gaisford played impressively except on the green. Miss Susie Tolhurst (Victoria) showed the effects of illness with her score of 87. The second round was played in threatening weather. Miss Kay was the star performer, and fully justified her Dominion rating of plus two by beating by two strokes the record of 77 for the links made by her team mate, Miss B. Gaisford in the handicap event on Monday last. Miss Kay's exhibition was marvellous to watch, even although she had three putts on two greens, this indicating the brilliance of her performance otherwise. Miss Lefebvre played below her standard, returning a card of 92. Miss Tolhurst, in spite of the fact that she was suffering from influenza, showed up well with SO. Miss Mona MacLeod, the defending champion, returned a card of 82. Sixteen players who returned the lowest cards will play in the knock-out tournament on Monday.
