SERVICE SOCCER.

AUCKLAND V. MATAMATA.

NAVY CHALLENGE MATCH. AUSTRALIA V. NEW ZEALAND. BLANDFORD PARK TO-MORROW. It is over seven years since the Soccer teams of the Australian and New Zealand Navies first met in Auckland and competed for the handsome shield which was then presented by the Auckland Foot-ball Association with a view to fostering the code in the sister services. New Zealand on that occasion won the trophy and has held it since, surviving two other challenges, one at Melbourne in 1929 and one at Sydney in 1932. To-morrow wUI see a determined effort on the part of the visitors to wrest the trophy from the holders, and it is stated that a. very strong eleven has been got together on the tour for this purpose. An indication or the standard of play which the visitors can be expected" to provide was given in a match yesterday at the_ dock ground between the ship teams from the Diomede and the Australia. In a game that at times produced sparkling Soccer, the Australia men gained the day by 2 goals to 0. There were some very cleverly concerted moves by both sides, but the Diomede defence wavered under the strenuous attacks and shock tactics of the visiting forwards. It was a highly spectacular game.

In the rales of the competition, drawn up mutually between the A.F.A. and the Naval authorities here, it is provided that the trophy be kept in the possession of the flagship of the winning squadron, and that challenge matches be arranged on every occasion, irrespective of locality, when two or more vessels of the Australian and New Zealand unite are gathered. In the event of a draw in the first match the intention is stated of staging a replay if possible to reach a decision. The association also undertakes to present a medal to each member of the winning team. Commodore Burges Watson will witness the match, and will be accompanied by several of the officers of both squadrons, while at the close of the match, if a decision is reached. Mrs. Burges Watson will present the shield to the winning team. The medals will be presented at the dinner to both teams at the Thistle Hotel in the evening. The game to-morrow will kick-off at 3.15. The New Zealand eleven will contain several players well-known for their prowess in matches against the local reps., and will he reinforced by one or two ratings who have recently come out from home. The visitors have several exponents who have earned State recognition in Australia, and they play a fast, forceful, and constructive game.
