OPOTIKI JOCKEY CLUB.
THE ANNUAL MEETING. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, Thursday. The annual meeting of the ' Opotiki Jockey Club was held on Wednesday night, the chair being occupied by Mr. A. Young, president. The election of officers resulted as follows—Patron, Mr. K. S. Williams. M.P.; president, Mr. A. Young (re-elected); vicepresidents, Messrs. F. Rcid and E. Reece; committee, Messrs. F. J. Short, J. T. Tabb, C. F. Clark, J. T. Clark, K. Hedlev, V. Appleton, W. A. Butler, S. D. Abbot, G. A. Hathaway, C. Black, J. J. Moody, R. Walker; auditor, Mr. A. Braae (reelected). The president, in his annual report, stated that the membership was very satisfactory, there being 125 financial mem-: bers. The season had been a very satisfactory one, considering the times. Every effort had been made to stay the decline in the- financial position, and despite the strictest economy the funds had been depleted by about £100. The annual race meeting had been held in ideal weather, but, due to clashing of dates, only a few horses from the Gisborne district had competed. The totalisator turnover was £1027, showing a decrease of £1359, as compared with the previous year. The telegraphing of investments would be a good thing for all country clubs, and failing this facility being granted, the only hope of assistance was by way of a drastic reduction in taxation.
Mr. J.. O'Sullivan contended that tho Government could do away with bookmakers if dividends could be published and backers allowed to telegraph bets. He suggested the member for the district be approached in an endeavour to secure these facilities. The president advised that no reply had yet been received to the club's request that the date of the Opotiki meeting be altered to "March 21, so as to avoid the clashing of dates.
