"MILDER VIEW."
SENTENCE ON WOMAN. MAGISTRATE RECONSIDERS. PROBATION FOR ONE YEAR. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) IXVERCARGILL, this day. Tin! magistrate, Mr. E. C. Levvey, has reconsidered his decision in the case of a married woman with live children, who was sentenced yesterday to one month's imprisonment for shoplifting, and admitted accused to probation for a year. The magistrate said lie was under the impression that the youngest child was aged I<>, but in view of the fact that several were of tender years the Court would take a milder view which might meet the full merits of the case. Before sentence was passed yesterday counsel asked for leniency, on the ground of the hardship to the husband, who is a relief worker, and the children. The magistrate said shoplifting appeared to lie increasing. Under certain circumstances, such as absolute destitution, some forms of shoplifting could he pitied, if not condoned, but in this case there was nothing to justify leniency. At counsel's request the sentence was increased by one day, to enable accused to appeal.
