BIG CHANGE.
DAIRY PRODUCE. CHEESE TO BUTTER. British Farmers Wish N.Z. Farmers to Alter System. PERSUASION TO BE APPLIED. (United P. A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, August 30. The "Daily Herald" agricultural correspondent, referring to the visit to New Zealand of Mr. T. Baxter, representative of the National Farmers' Union, says Mr. Baxter, who is chairman of the Milk Board, hastily arranged the visit. It is due to an attempt to persuade New Zealand farmers to make a big change over from cheese to butter. The members of the Milk Board desire tliis in order that large-scale factory manufacture of cheese may be built up, thus utilising at least 40 per cent of the British milk "which is now a surplus. Mr. Baxter hopes to convince New Zealand farmers that the difficulties that have arisen in the Ottawa agreement would thus be overcome. Neither Government is anxious to reopen tlie Ottawa arrangements, but it is believed that if the farmers of the two countries settle their problems on a voluntary basis it would be on the understanding that no official encouragement was given to factory butter making in Britain.
