SALEM HOUSE.

VALUABLE SOCIAL WORK. A review of the work of Salem House, Cook Street, and the activities of the | staff in training girls was given by the matron, Mrs. John Graham, at the annual meeting of the Door of Hope Association yesterday. Mr. W. 11. Wilson presided. The year, said Mrs. Graham, had been by far the most difficult one she could remember, but fortunately there were no girls in the home who were out of employment. Besides finding positions for their own girls, the assogiation had also placed 40 other girls during the year. The association had helped families in the district to found their homes on Christian principles. What was most wanted was a healthy, helpful, sane religion. Mr. Wilson said the success of the work had been emphasised by the fact that in the last 10 years the number of failures had been less than 10 per cent. Girls passing through the home were protected and strengthened by fine Christian influences, and almost invariably left the home with a deep-rooted faith that stood to them in the battle of life. Ten years of loyal service had been completed by the matron, and Mr. Wilson paid a tribute to Mrs. Graham's work and efficiency. During that time she had been greatly assisted by the work of lier sister, Miss C. Laiiauze. Dr. Woodward Horsley was also thanked for his honorary medical services. Unfortunately, said Mr. Wilson, the financial year had not been as successful as the previous one, there being a debit balance of £318 in the income and expenditure account. There was an urgent necessity for the work of Salem House becoming more widely known, and Mr. Wilson appealed for greater public support for such a worthy cause. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Messrs. H. D. Guthrie and H. Ennor were re-elected to the committee unopposed, and Mr. H. W. Shove was re-elected auditor. An address on "Joyful Righteousness" was given by Rev. A. V. Whiting.
