TWO MEN CHASED. ATTEMPTED BURGLARY? HOPE AND SNIPS FOUND. Found in suspicious circumstances in a dark lane at the back of Tutt.'s mercer's shop at the top of Symonds Street about 10.45 last evening, two men were chased by Constable- E. Gaines, but escaped. The constable hit one man with his baton, but the blow was not hard enough to stop him. Constable Gaines was on beat duty, and decidedto have a look- down a lane ■which runs at the side and the back of Tutt's shop. As he'turned the corner into the dark back part of the lane he saw the silhouette of two men crouched under a window at , the back of the shop. When he moved towards them they jumped to. their feet, .separated,. and ran off in opposite directions. The constable chased one, but he disappeared in the darkness.
