RELIEF WORKS.
MOUNT ALBERT PROPOSAL EXPENDITURE OF £40,000? A proposal to expend £40,000 on works for the relief of unemployment was brought forward at a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening by the Mayor, Mr. R. E. Ferner. THe Mayor said that it was a question of policy which had the approval of the ratepayers. He considered that the money should be spent on drainage and roading works, and that the Unemployment Board should be called on as a necessary part of the scheme to pay interest and sinking fund charges for the first five years. He said that 160 men could be given work at standard rates of pay for five days a week for a year. On a conservative basis the cost to the board under present conditionsfor 160 men for a year would be, £14,000, while, calculating interest and sinking fund charges at 5J per cent, the cost to the board of the scheme would be £11,000, spread over five years. Mr. F. E. . Martin supported the scheme. He said that under its terms full rates of pay of £3 10/ a week could not be paid. The Mayor said that he had in mind £3 a week. The council decided to support the proposal.
