Morgan, J. Jordan ; halves, J. Young, A Revburn, E. Thomas; forwards, R. Scown R. "Bamford, G. Fetch, A. Taplin, L. Guise. From the opening bully Reyburn sen Taranaki away, but Auckland countere< along the right. Chapman centred and Jer ram shot from an acute angle. Young and Scown set Taranaki on tni move, and Fetch streaked for the circle but the defence held. Auckland were agan goal hunting, Chapman shooting from t clearance by Jordan, and a corner eventu ated. From a free hit Bamford made ni opening and Auckland were cornered. Rey burn and Petch renewed the attack. Flee cleared and a rush along the right wai settled by Jordan. Scown put in a gooc run, but was unable to shoot effectively Auckland took play to the other end, when Jerram's centre ■produced a corner. A couple of free hits saw the attack in Auck land territory, but the home team cleared and Twigden breaking through sent bacl from the goal line, and Roughton, who wa: handy, scored with a judicious shot. Taranaki retaliated immediately, ant Airey stopped a good shot, which Taplir repeated, and Hay came to the rescue Auckland took up the running, but th< movement broke down. Guise broke away but his centre was countered by Hay. How ever, Scown picked up, and some close work eventuated in the circle, from which Guise scored after seventeen minutes' play. Taranaki maintained the pressure until Chapman got away. Although interrupted by Thomas, the Auckland attack continued, and the Taranaki goal was in grave danger. Morgan, Jordan and Reyburn offeree strong resistance, and St. George stopped a hot shot from Twigden. A bout of hard hitting terminated in a fine passing rush in which Chapman, Andrews and Roughton participated, the centre forward beating the goalie with a good shot. Taranaki hammered away at the Auckland goaf but it was not until Scown s opening that Bamford had a clear opportunity, and he made no mistake. Auckland 2 Taranaki z On resumption Auckland were first away, Jerram, Twigden and Roughton reaching the circle. A brief Taranaki aftack was countered by Clark, and Tnranaki were again on the chalk line. The siege was raised by a long hit, but Auckland were soon back again, and some tricky passing endangered the visitors' citadel, which, had the narrowest of escapes. Taranaki strove hard to gain the ascendancy, but the Auckland full-back line was safe, and play drifted back to the visitors' twenty-five. Then came a ■"great run, Petch and Bamford invading the circle, but Taplin's shot was half-smothered. Play became more even. However, Auckland were not to be denied, and Chapman forced a corner, from which Roughton scored with a fast shot. Taranaki worked towards the Auckland goal, but a run by Andrews countered: however, they slogged their way back, and Hay found the line, and a little later a big hit brought Auckland into the circle, where St. George "booted" to safety. A left flank movement saw- Jerram, Twigden and Roughton invade the circle, but the ball could not be overtaken. Another •movement from the left saw Roughton accept a pass, and, graining the circle, he notched Auckland's fourth goal. Further attacking enabled the Aucklanders to bombard the goal, but Taranaki cleared. Then a splendid concerted attack by Scown, Bamford and Petch gave the last-named an opportunity, and he did the trick. Auckland replied with several sorties, and Twigden, reaching the circle, Jerram dived in, and as he was falling pushed the ball into the net. Taranaki fought desperately, but their attack became somewhat ragged. However, the Auckland defence was harried, and Airey stopped shots from Peteh and Bamford. Jnst on the call of time Roughton accepted a pass from Chapman just as the goalie attempted to stop, and the ball reached the net. •• Auckland 6 Taranaki 3 Messrs. A. Playle and E. J.
