RANFURLY SHIELD.

CANTERBURY ROMPS HOME,

SOUTHLAND BEATEN" 21 TO 3

(By I'elesraph.— Special to "Star.")

CIIHISTCHURCH, Saturday. There were move than 22.000 people at Lancaster Park to-day for thu Canterbury v. Southland Ranfurly Shield match.

Canterbury forwards rose to tbn occasion, and Oliver played brilliantly at centre, with the result that Southland was beaten .by 21 points to 3. Andrews aitU. Howcll scored tries which Nolan converted in the first spell, leaving the home team in front JO—o at half-time. King, Hart and Manchester added tries iu tlie second spell, Nolan converting one. McKay scored a try for Southland. i'he Canterbury backs worn faster and more polished all through, but it was the splendid work of the forwards that -was the deciding factor. Outweighed by an average of 11 lb -por man the Canterbury vanguard fought like tigera. They secured their fair share of the ball in the scrums and line-outs while three of the Canterbury trirs were due to forward rushes. The game was .played at a terrific pace Mffhfc through. In the iirst spell the onslaught of the heavy Southlanders was met in every department, and the fit Canterbury men did their best to run the Southlanders off their feet. Purdue, Pawson and Southern were jiiafcchcd by Manchester, Hartnell and Andrews, and in the back division Canterbury had a decided superiority. Mullun gave a great display behind the pack. Mortlock and Hazelliurst gave and took their passes with precision, while Oliver's speed and dash at centre bored through the opposition time after time. Hart was good on tho wing, without quite justifying expectations, and Dunshca did not "fulfil promise. Nolan played an. excellent game at full-back. The Southland backs defended well and showed some tine individual form, but their passing was not as clean and their thrusts not as well timed as those of Canterbury. Thomas did a lot of hard work behind the scrum. Sharpe nnd Grant shone individually on many occasions, while Geddes, Mitchell and McKay made a fast and sound three-quarter line. Southland's one try was the result of a brilliant run by McKay. Porter played a very sound came at full-back until he was injured half-way through the second spell. Canterbury's win was well deserved. The team had the extra polish all round that wins big matches. The South Island selectors, Messrs. A. Adams (Grcymouth) and P. Harvey (Ohristchureh\ watched the match. The South Tsland team to play the North Island will be picked on September 0.
