DESTITUTE COUPLE.
THEFT OF MOTOR CAR.
"ABSOLUTELY PENNILESS." (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAWERA, Thursday. A story that when destitute in search of a place for himself and his wife to sleep he succumbed to the temptation of taking a car in an endeavour to reach relations at Hamilton was told hy Allan James Carter, aged 22, in the Magistrate's Court, when he and his wife, Margaret.Patience Carter, aged 19, were charged with converting a motor car at Wellington, on August 8.
The man was also charged with the theft of five gallons of benzine, which he secured without payment at a petrol station at Kaiiwi. Both pleaded guilty. The police said there was no doubt the pair were absolutely penniless. Carter was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, and his wife was con- ; 1 yictefl, and, discharged.
