LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

ROOPE ROOSTER FINAL.

RICHMOND MEETS CITY

START OF CHALLENGE MATCHES

The big attraction at Carlaw Park to-morrow will be the final of the Roope Booster knock-out competition between Richmond and City teams. Both these sides came with a late run in the club championship competition, and just missed getting into the final for the honours, but they demonstrated the solid nature of their improvement in the opening rounds of the Roope Rooster event. City disposed of Devonport, the club champions, and Richmond, who, at this stage had been joined by A. E. Cooke, got the verdict over Marist, the runners-up. Both these teams, City and Richmond, have their own peculiarities of play, the former generally winning their matches in the last few minutes of the game, often from what looks to be hopeless positions. At the same time they are subject to lapses at odd moments likely to cost them dear when opposed by such smart individualists as are in the Richmond side. It looks a game which is very open, and likely to produce thrills. The curtain-raiser will be the first game of a special challenge competitibn, played under unusual conditions. Play is to be restricted to forty minutes, twenty minutes each way, without a spell, and in addition to the customary scoring points will be added a point for each force-down against the defending side. Ponsonby and Devonport will be the teams on No. 1 ground for this competition, while at 2.30 p.m. Newton _ and Marist play under similar conditions on No, 2 ground, and the first spell of the main match (Richmond-City) will also count in this competition.
