TWO RECORDS.
MAN GETS ANOTHER CHANCE.
A man who possessed two records — one, a fine war record, and the other a number of previous convictions, John Douglas Stark, aged 35, labourer, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court this morning for sentence on a charge of stealing a rooster valued at £.2 2/ and a hen worth 10/, the property of George Mills. Detective-Sergeant O'Sullivan said accused had been remanded since earlier in the week so that the police might make some further inquiries. There were no further charges to be brought against him.
iou have a lot of previous convictions against you, Stark," said Mr. McKean as he scanned the two sheets. "I understand you have another record which is very much in your favour. But the one I have here is unfortunately not in your favour."
The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said he had known Stark for many years. Although he had a bad list, he was sure that Stark, if given another chance, would do well.
Remarking that most of Stark"? convictions were for offences arising out of drink, the magistrate convicted and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon.
