HENDERSON RATES.
Although a substantial ratepayer to the Henderson Town Board, I knew nothing of the meeting of ratepayers until I read the report in Saturday's "Star," and I must say the report discloses an ugly position. It seems that those of us who are paying our rates are to pay for those who are not. The ; chairman said that the outstanding rates now amount to £4780, an increase of £700 on last year, but he .does not say what steps are being taken to collect these arrears, and if the present passive attitude continues half the ratepayers will be paying all the rates and the other half laughing at them. It may be impossible to .sell properties, but if the board . resumed possession, particularly of vacant land, it could lease the land at a lpw rent and in time this land would become valuable endowments. The position in Henderson will be that there will be more unpaid rates than ever with a staggering rate of 1/ in the pound. I, for one, will only be able to pay part of mine unless some unforeseen good fortune- comes along. 1 ~' ■ . HENDERSON RATEPAYER.
