WINTER BOWLING.

TOURNAMENT FINALS. MORE FIXTURES AHEAD. CLASHING OF DATES. (By TRUNDLER.)

Another fine Saturday was appreciated all the more on account of the repetition of the previous week's experience, the welcome recovery after a stormy Friday encouraging a good attendance at the winter greens. Hillsborc , " made a good start with a two-day tournament, most of the players completing the third round before darkness set in. It. will be conr tinued next Saturday.

Two of the two-day tournaments in which section play had occupied the previous two Saturdays were brought to a conclusion, the final in each case being much in the nature o£ a runaway. At Balmoral the visitors had all been eliminated, leaving the final to local rinks, and that of H. 11. Goldsmith defeated W. D. Kelly's rather easily, although they were level when they adjourned for a cup of tea.

The Auckland final went to the Stanley visitors by a substantial margin over the local rink, the two cx-champions of the North Shore Club making a combination that is always very hard to beat.

At Onehunga the experience was ' just the opposite, for Robertson led very comfortably most of tho way, but Harrison evened the score at 19 all by notching eight points on tho last four heads. Another head was played, and again Harrison's men were lying two or three for a win, but Ross put his last bowl on the white, and neither of the skips disturbed tho head. Robertson will now meet Eraser (Mount Eden) in the final next Saturday.

The only inter-club challenge trophies to be retained on Saturday were the Edwin Stars, in which Remuera secured their sixth win, this time against one of the strongest rinks that Rocky Nook could field. The next challengers, are W. Denison (Balmoral) and J. Pick (Ponsonby).

The Denison Pins were taken from Takapuna after a very interesting and close contest. The score was 11 all on the eleventh head, after which the visitors gradually forged ahead, leaving the final score: R. J. Carbines, L. Jury. E. .Tury, F. W. Oates (Ponsonby) challengers 21, v. T. Price, E. Hunt, G. Dunlop, E. B. Bennet (Takapuna)' holders 16. As the Ponsonby greens are being prepared for the summer season the new holders will defend their trophies on the West End green next Saturday, the challengers being B. Buchanan, W. Cox, J. Lowe, R. N. Melville (Devonport). and the next on the list are R. Griffiths (Remuera), W. Corrin (Waitemata) and W. A. Loram (Rocky Nook).

St. Helicr's registered their fourth win in the Jordan Pins, again securing rather a heavy margin: J. Thomson, G. Warren, J. Roberts, R. Dawson (holders) 21, v. J. H. Harlock, G. H. Bray, F. C. Marks, C. A. Lindbcrg (Onehunga) challengers 12. .Next Saturday the holders propose to defend their trophies on the Onehunga green, tho challenger being C. Lynch (Ellerslie).

Fine weather will be vci\v welcome during the next few days, for Mount Albert are to-day running off their rink tournament postponed from last Wednesday on account of bad weather. Pukekohe will stage a similar function to-morrow. Offehunga already have about twenty rinks entered for Wednesday,, and there will be rinks at Grey Lynn on Thursday. Oh Wednesday of next week there is a rink tournament at Epsom.

Just before tile last annual meeting of delegates it was suggested in this column that it looked as if the time had arrived wlien there would be an. advantage in officially sanctioning the open tournaments during the winter, just as they are done in the summer, not with any idea of restricting them, but. in order to avoid needless clashing. The first glaring instance of this has now occurred. It was announced in this column last week that on September 2 the annual match between Queen Street and Karangahape Road will be played at Epsom, and it is very unlikely that this will be any smaller than last year, when 38 rinks were engaged. Now there comes word that Balmoral and Mount Albert are both holding a twoSaturday tournament on August 26 and September 2, and only the totally unexpected can prevent the business match spoiling the two club tournaments, or less the club tournaments spoiling the Epsom function. On the other hand, if one of these had been timed for a. week earlier, August 19 and 26, the only clashing would have been with Hillsboro' next Saturday, which would have raised no difficulties whatever. . . ' • ! '

Bowlere will need to be very careful about their engagements during the rest of the winter season, or else they will be making promises which they may find at the last minute that they are unable to keep, thereby upsetting the draw and in-

convenieneing everybody. Probably the sS way to prevent very ajrgrava, ting experiences would be to carefully note the fixtures that are so far announced:— August 19-Hillsboro's tournament. August 26-Balmoral and Mount Albert September 2-Balmoral and Mount Albert torments and business, match at Epsom. September &-Oddfellows at Kpsom. September Old Boys at Mount Eden and Thames Old Boys-at E Sember 23-Mount Eden tournament. September 30-Mount Eden tournament and probably a still larger function not yet definitely settled. Alterations or additions to this list will be advised- in due course.
