SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A united meeting of Warkworth, Matakana and Leig-h W.C.T.U. unions was held in the Methodist Church, Warkworth, on Friday to meet Miss C. McLay, who gave an interesting address on "Awakening Womanhood."

The second anniversary of the inauguration of the Sandringham branch of the 'League of Mothers was celebrated by a "husbands' evening" at the Carlton Hall on Saturday. Mrs. Gilmour, president, welcomed the gueete, amongst whom were Mrs. S. 0. English (provincial president), Mrs. F. White (provincial secretary), and members from the Mount Albert and Mount Eden branches. Vocal and elocutionary items were rendered by Mesdames Harvey and Howard. These were followed by a humorous., sketch given by the dramatic circle. Mr. D. M. Rae, M.A., prinpipal of the Auckland Training College, gave a most interesting address on the modern system of education. A competition, arranged by Mrs. Helmbrecht, was won by Mrs. Pawley and Mr. Markwick. Supper was served by the committee and the cake, : .which Mrs. Gilmour had made and presented to the branch was cut and distributed, and a very pleasant evening was brought to a close by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." i

An enjoyable party was given by the lady associates of Belmont Presbyterian Church last week to celebrate the birthday of one of its members —Mrs. Phillips. The lady associates took advantage of the occasion to express to Mrs. Phillips their gratitude and appreciation of her active interest in the affairs of the church. The hall was artistically decorated with coloured streamers and flowere. The guest of honour was the recipient of a beautiful vase presented by the president, Mrs. Aitken, on behalf of the associates. Later, the 65 candles on the birthday cake were lit, and the cake was cut by Mrs. Phillips. Mr. Reynolds proposed the toast of Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, to which Mr. Phillips replied. Mr. Collett then proposed the toast of. the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. R, L. Walker, to which Mr. Walker replied. Iteme were given by Mrs. Young and Miss Verran. • • • •

The monthly At Home of the Catholic Women's League was held at the league rooms yesterday afternoon. A large crystal bowl of daffodils and tangerine Iceland poppies held pride of place in the centre of the room, while brass bowls of greenery and crimson rhododendrons were placed in the corners. Vases of Iceland poppies brightened the small tables. Mre. G. Craig, of Wellington, who is visiting Auckland with her husband, Dr. Craig, of tho Tariff Commission, was the guest of honour for the afternoon. Before the commencement of the afternoon's programme the president, Mrs. M. Pilling, spoke of tho great loss sustained by the past president, Mre. J. J. O'Brien, in the death of her husband, and asked those present to stand for a few moments in silence to express their sympathy. Included in the programme were vocal solos by Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Stephenson, accompanied by Mr. Leo Whittaker, elocutionary iteme by Miss Mary Cruickshank, and pianoforte solo 3by Miss Joyce Parker.

A party was held in the returned soldiers' clubroom at Northcote on Saturday evening in celebration of the birthday of Miss Blanche Davey, who wore a frock of sea green all-over lace, with lavender trimmings. Her mother, Mrs. E. C. Davey, who was the hostess, wore black georgette and lace. The decorations of the tables and hall were of iris, daffodils and paper festoons. The dance music was played by Mrs. A. J. Hurley, who wore a frock of black panne velvet. Among those present were: Mrs. A.' E. Greenslade, in" black georgette; Mrs. A. E. Hartigan, black lace; Mrs. H. Tho historical comedy "Pocahontaa," tho third annual production of the O-tahuhu High Scliool, was presented to a packed house in the Otahuhu Public Hall last evening. The production was a splendid performance and the best staged in the district since the school play last year. It will extend over a season of four nights, being presented in the Otahuhu Public Hall again this evening, in Mangere East on Wednesday, and in° Papatoetoe on Thursday. The play ie divided into two acts, and the singing and acting reach a particularly high amateur standard, displaying the fruits of careful and faithful preparation. Among those taking part were: Phyllis Mathews, Marion Dixon, Agnes Weir, Patricia Mathews, Leonore Mabcrley, Leslie Williamson, Colin Mason, Mervyn Fernyhough and Owen Gilmore. The supporting cast comprised: Patricia Sly, Noeline McLeod, Bernico Stonex, Joyce Webber (chorus); Dulcie Muljins, Margaret Mears, Doreen Tomes, Ella Brown (pages); Phyllis Broderick, Marion Trimble, Gladye Cox, June Trezise, Margaret Wolfe, Hilda Kitto, Mary Dempsey, Jean Douglas, Olive Bryers, Elaine Tomes, Elaine Wright, Jean Marshall, Phyllis Cochrane, Emily Foley, Helen Scorrar, Florence Chalmers, Mabel Sutcliffe, Kathleen Bell (squaws); Mary Crosby, Flora Curtis, Rose Maberley, Pearl. The seventh annual report of the Ponsonby branch of the League of Mothers showed that the branch is progressing. Regular meetings have been held on the first Wednesday of each month, except in May, \vlien fathers' night was held on the first Saturday, and July, when the members attended a social to Lady Bledisloo in the concert chamber of the Town Hall. The meetings have been under the guidance of Mrs. English, president. Fathers' night was a success, and is to be an annual arrangement. The branch again acknowledged its indebtedness to the management of Leys Institute for allowing the free use of the gymnasium hall, with the facilities for making afternoon tea, and also the committee room each month. Thanks were due to Mr. Kae, principal of the Training. College, fpr an address on education, Mrs. F. W. Whyte on "Running the home on a co-operative basis," and the Rev. Bower Black on "Youth and freedom and responsibility of parents." The present • membership stands at 120, a good percentage of these being young mothers.
