BAKEWELL TOPS CENTURY,

(United P.A.-Elcctric Telegraph—Copyright)

LONDON, August 13

The third Test match between the West Indies cricketers and England was begun on Saturday at the Oval. The weather was fine and the wicket in good condition. The attendance totalled 17,000.

The teams were: —West Indies: Grant (captain), Roach, Barrow, Headley, Da Costa, Scaly, Merry, Achong, Valentine, Martindale and Griffiths, with Christiahi as twelfth man. England: Wyatt (captain), Walters, Turnbull, Marriott, Hammond, Ames, Langridge, Nicholls, Clark, Bakewcll and Barnett, with Gregory as twelfth man.

England won the toss and batted. The team made an inglorious start, the bowlers having the upper hand. Four of the best men were back in the pavilion by lunch time.

Walters was well caught in the slips at the second attempt off the fifth ball. Hammond had a life off the next ball, Headley just failing in a brilliant attempt at a catch.

Wyatt started steadily, but was caught when he appeared to be set. The first hour yielded only 34 runs.

Bakewell played with the utmost caution and did not attempt to touch many of Martindalc's "bumpers."

Tho weather improved after lunch and the batsmen were able to see the rising balls better. Bake well's century took 145 minutes. He hit eight fours. Ames' bright innings lasted 55 minutes. His 37 included live boundaries. Barnett and Nicholls had a merry partnership, tho latter scoring quickly on tho leg side, till Headley and Achong slowed them down. Scores: — ENGLAND.—First Innings.
