MORE AND MORE GOLD.
Australia has produced gold to the value of nearly £700,000,000, including a value of £305,000,000 from the small State of Victoria. There are great auriferous deposits —quartz lodes and allu- j vial leads—that have been only partly prospected. For the past year the work in the eastern States has been done by small companies anxious for weekly yields, and without the means for large schemes of development. The prospects for powerful companies, especially in view of the unprecedentedly high prices for gold, are extensive, and they ought to be attractive. Mining is becoming more active throughout the Commonwealth and more payable. The appended table shows the advance in production for the March quarter of each of the last three years for West Australia, and also for the whole Commonwealth:— Three Months Eh<Jod March 31. 1831. 1032. 1038.
