SAVIDAN AGAIN.

CROSS-COUNTRY RACE. PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP. One of tho largest musters of athletes to compete at au athletic carnival in Auckland, wiue in attendance at Ellerslie on Saturday, when the 10,000 metres provincial cross-country championship of Auckland was held. The event was decided in two different sections, A and B grades, and altogether 102 athletes faced the starter, Including representatives from Hamilton. Sixty-two men lined up for the B grade event, and McCarthy, assuming command at the end of half a mile, never looked likely to sustain defeat, finally running home a winner by over 100 yards. A member of the Lynndale Club, McCarthy has been steadily improving right through tin; season and is rated as second best to Brown in tho club. Lynndale, in this event, registered a wonderful performance, their four members of the team finishing first, second, third and seventh. One of the features of the race was that of the 10-year-old Papatoetoo runner, W. Littler, whn finished in fourth place.

The A grade event was regarded as a foregone conclusion for the New Zealand champion, J. W. Sayidan, this brilliant distance athlete giving a nice display to outclass his opponents and win by over 200 yards. Browne always held second place right from the start, and holding Hill safely in the run home, defeated him by 20 yards. The results :— 10,000 Metres Provincial Championship (A Grade). —J. W. Savidau 1, A. B. Browne 2, G. Hill 3. Forty competitors faced the starter, Sayidan quickly takinff charge, and at the end of a mile led Browne by 10 yards, with Farland, McKenzie, Nicholson, Hcwitson, Ready and Hill following. With only two miles to go, Savidan had cleared out from the field and was leading Browne by 130 yards, then coming Hill. McKenzie, Nicholson, Ready, Carter and Bradley. No one had a chance with Savidan over the last bit, the New Zealand champion finally running homo a comfortable winner by 200 yards from Browne who defeated Hill by. 20 yards. R. McKenzie was fourth 100 yards away, with Nicholson, Andrews, Ready, Bradley, Carter, Piuson, Briggs and Harding finishing in that order. Time, 30.22. B, Grade.—C. McCarthy 1, G. Crompton 2, J. Green 3. Tho three men who filled the places were always at the head of the Held, McCarthy' finally beating Crompton by 100 yards, with Green 30 yards away third. Then came Littler, Ohms, Clarke, Hcnshall, Fowlds and Dunn. Time, 39.27. Tho A grado sealed handicap resulted In a victory for A. Harding, with G. Hill and If. Jelly in the minor places, while in the B grade event Thrift, Littler and Ohms were the placings.

AUCKLAND TEAM.

The following team has been picked to represent the Auckland province at the New Zealand cross-country championship at Wanganui, on August 26:— J. W. Savidan, A. Browue, G. Hill, A. McKenzie, and J. Nicholson. Hill and McKenzie are both under 19 years, and it is the.first time they have represented Auckland. Hill ran a remarkaide race on Saturday, thereby gaining himself a place In the team.

CANTERBURY'S RACE.

CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Canterbury senior cross-country championship of six eniles and a quarter, resulted in a win for A. D. Park (Baptist Club, Christchurch), who covered the distance in 39.40. G: H. Watson (Christchurch) was second, and W. Taylor (Timaru) third. In the junior cross-country championship R. Rogers (Christchurch) was first, and G. McKirdy (Timaru) second.

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP.

. ' ' DUNEDIN, this dar. Tho" cross-country championship resulted :—J. G. Barnes 1, J. J. Morris -2, W. Puliar 3. Time, 32.50. Caversham won < the team match. The Otago team for the New Zealand championship is :—Barnes, Morris, Puliar, Allen, E. C. Brown, Stewart.
