Mr. Lincoln Ellsworth, who proposes to fiy the Antarctic Continent towards the end of December, has taken up his quarters here for the time being. He is accompanied by Mrs. Ellsworth and her mother. Mrs. J. S. Ulmer. Mr. Ellsworth is naturally a centre of attraction, and was accorded a warm reception by the guests staving at The Chateau. The manager, Mr. R. Cobbc, referred to the explorer's record and assured him of the pleasure it gave New Zcalanders to have him in their midst prior to his flight from tho Ross Sea to the Weddell Sea, Not only New Zealand but the whole world was intensely interested in the great adventure. Mr. Ellsworth has lost no time since his arrival in New Zealand on Friday in making preparations to get himself into proper fettle for his voyage South. Yesterday morning he set out for a 22-mile walk along the Tokaanu Poail, unaccompanied. He intends walking as far as the Tama Lakes and the Waihohono Hut to-day. He expressed the opinion that the mountainous character of the National Park country was ideal for his purpose of getting fit. Other visitors who arrived during the week-end included 20 members of the Alpine Sports Club in charge of Mr. R. D. Macklow, with Mr. Desmond Jackson as deputy-leader. They will remain for a week and take part" in the club skiing championships. Less snow has fallen this winter than for sonic years, and below the Salt Hut j a great deal of rock is uncovered. Snow conditions are reasonably good above the hut, and there is ample snow for eki-ing.
