.MAU AND ADMINISTRATOR. NAVAL MEN ENTERTAINED. — 1 CBy Telegraph.— Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Samoan correspondent of the United Press Association, writing from Apia on August \3, states that Mau leaders liave lately liad several meetings with the Administrator, Mr. H. E. Hart, with a view to the settlement of grievances. Although no definite conclusions have yet been arrived* at, the position has greatly improved, negotiations towards a settlement being further advanced than has been the case for some considerable time. , H.M.s. Dunedin made a six days' visit to Apia from July 26. Officers and crew were hospitably entertained. The Dunedin afterwards visited Pago Pago. The Bishop of Polynesia, the Rt. Rev. L. S. Ivempthorne, who was a passenger on the Dunedin, was entertained at a reception and social by members of tlie Apia Anglican Church. A severe earth tremor was felt on Monday morning, July 24, preceded by a rumbling sound, houses being violently shaken and articles displaced.
Mr. Mcßride, head of the Native Office in Samoa, is being transferred to New Zealand, having been in ill-health for some time. \
