A great deal of needless waste arose from the bruising of sheep and lambs 011 their way to the freezing works, stated Mr. A. C. Cameron, of Dunedin, in an uddrcss at the Young Farmers' School at lnvereargiil. He explained that in Otago extensive investigations had been made as to the causes for such damage to the skins and carcases. A variety of reasons, among them 'the driving of sht-ep against fences on the farms, knocks in transit, and cureless handling in freezing works had been discovered, and with the knowledge gained it had been possible to reduce the damage to almost negligible proportions. .The avoidance of bruising was additionally important in view of the uses to which the pelts of sheep and lambs were now being put, purposes for which (lawless skins were, for the most part essential. It had been found, for instance, that fine liimb pelts, Specially prepared, made the best possible covering for the cotton rollers used in the great Lancashire cotton industry. Sheepskins were now being treated by a process which included the r-.ilbuViug of (hem in attractive dwijins and were . us'y.t for a variety of purposes, including furniture upholstery- From trimmings hat lining bands were made.
