SIX PROGRAMMES LISTED.

FIRST TO-MORROW AFTERNOON.

Music-lovers and the general public in Auckland will next week have the opportunity to enjoy the greatest selection of musical entertainment offered them since 1931. To-morrow afternoon Auckland's second Music Week festival will be inaugurated with a recital by the Chamber Music Society-in the Town Hall concert chamber. Six programmes have been arranged, embodying all classes of musical entertainment, and enlisting some of the best talent in the city. To-morrow afternoon's concert will be preceded by an address by Mr. Maughan Bamett, after which Mr. R. G. Simmers will sing "The Lime Tree" (Schubert), "I Will Not Grieve" (Schumann), and "The Sea Gipsy" (Head). Then follows Grieg's 'cello sonata in A minor, played by Miss Molly Wright ('cello) and Miss Dora Judson (piano). Madame Irene Ainsley will sing the gavotte "And ICnowest Thou the Dear Land," from "Mignon." and the programme will conclude with the Brahms piano quintet, played by Miss Ina Bosworth (first violin), Miss Lois Walls (second violin), Miss Amy Stevenson (viola), Miss Lalla Hemus ('cello) and Miss Dora Judson (piano). On Monday night there will be a "National Concert" in the Town Hall. The Highland Pipe Band will play in a march up Queen Street before the concert. Tlio Auckland Municipal Band will open the programme with an overture, "Festival of the Empire," after which songs and music representative of Wales will be provided by the following combinations and artists: the Municipal Band, Mr. Ernest Thomas, Miss. Doris Jenkins, Miss Ida Lockwood, Miss Phyllis Hazell and Mr. Reginald Morgan. Irish airs and melodies will then be given by the Leys Institute Orchestra and Mr. Roger Errington, Miss Mavis Grevatt, Mrs. Gordon Hillyer and Mr. Stanley Pritchard. The St. Andrew's Society has arranged the Scottish portion, which will be rendered by the following singers: Mr. Peter Dawson, Mrs. A. Rattray, Mr. George Spicer,'Mr. J. McDougall, Miss Reta MacCullay, and the Balmoral Quartet. The concert will conclude with items given by the representatives Oi England, Mr. Lambert Harvey, Miss Freda Evans, the Clarion Quartet and Mr. Frank Sutherland, who will sing Sir Edward Elgar's "Land of Hope and Glory," accompanied by the Municipal Band, and with the audience in chorus. The accompanists will be Miss Tlieo. Halpin, Miss Kathleen O'Learv and Mr. Leo Whittaker.

On Tuesday night choirs, drawn from 14 primary schools, will present a fine programme under the baton of Mr. E. Varley Hudson. Choruses will be sung hy the various schools separately, and also by the massed choirs. Miss Tlieo. Halpiri will be the accompanist. The secondary schools will follow on Wednesday night with a programme 'of unison and part-songs and orchestral items. Mr. H. Hollinrakc will conduct the massed choirs and the orchestra, Mr. K. J. Dcllow the massed boys, and Miss C. M. Herbert the massed girls. The accompanist for the massed items will be Mr. H. C. Luscombe. A choral and orchestral concert will be given 011 Thursday evening by a festival chorus and orchestra conducted by Mr. 15. Varley Hudson. The choral works will be "A Song of Destiny" (Brahms) and Parry's "Blest Pair of Sirens." The orchestra will be heard in selections from Tsclwikowsky's "Nutcracker Suite." Mrs. Cyril Towsey and Mr. Len Barnes arc the assisting vocalists. Mr. Haydn Murray will be the leader of the orchestra, and Miss Kathleen O'Learv will accompany the vocal solo numbers.

The final programme will take the form of an instrumental and vocal concert, to be given on Friday night. The Ponsonby Boys' Band is to play up Queen Street before the commencement of the concert. This programme, of a miscellaneous character, will be given by the following artists and musical organisations: The German Club Orchestra, the "Co-Optimists." Miss Berta Carr. Miss Ida. Lockwood. Miss Gladys Wilson, Mrs. M. Gully, Mr. Eric Bell, the Lyric Quartet. Mr. Vincent Aspey and Mr. Barry Coney.
