DEBATING.
PAPATOETOE CLUB. "That the world is a worse place to live in to-day than it was a century ago" was the subject of a debate held by the Papatoetoe Literary and Debating Society at Papatoetoe on ■ Saturday . evening. The negative was taken by the St. Mary's Debating Society, Hamilton, represented bv Messrs. Smith, Griffin and Winn, and the affirmative by Messrs. Close.v, Burton and Mahon, the local team. The judge, Mr. Louis Phillips, of Auckland, awarded the debate to Papatoetoe by 2G4 points to 247. Mr. Smith thanked the judge for his constructive criticism, which, he said, helped the team far more than the actual debate. A vote of thanks was accorded the chairman, Mr. R. W. Miller, secretary of the Auckland Debating Societies Union.
