PONSONBY GAIN ONE POINT MARGIN.
At the Showgrounds, Ponsonby filled the lireieh in place of Parnell, who were to have played Manukau In the Jubilee Cup competition, but defaulted. Designated as n. "friendly," the contest was well named, for although the thirty players gave a fast exhibition of Rugby, it was obvious Ihat some of the stars were holding back in view of more important contests that nre to come. There was plenty of action, but the keenness that has characterised 3'onsonby play in the ctiampionliip competition was absent. It might have been exnected from the calibre of the players that this "friendly" would have produced some sparkling wU amongst. the> backs, liut the reverse was the ease. Both Jldes handled indifferently, and there was not one good passing bout in the whole of the match. Manukau led by three points to nil at the end of the first spell. Heazlewood kicking a penalty goal. Early in the second half Ponsonby opened their account. Bond and Fraser' each scored tr.es which .Tamieson converted. Manukau followed this up with two tries scored by Brimble and Hadfield, but as neither was converted Ponsonby walked off winners by one point. Ponsonby . Manukau • a Mr. Paull was referee.
