MR. GEORGE WOOD.
A well-known Birkenhead resident, Mr. George Wood, died at his home at Birkdalo 011 Saturday afternoon, at the age of nearly SO years. Since coming.to the district ten years ago he had taken a prominent part in its activities, particularly in regard to the public hall and the ratepayers' organisation at Birkdale. Born in West Australia in 1853, Mr. Wood camo to New Zealand when 21 years old and carried on farming operations on an extensive scale in Southland. Later, in conjunction with Mr. A. A. Mac Gibbon, he conducted an auctioneering business for five years at Gore, ay hero he was a member of the borough council. Disposing of his interests, Mr, Wood next came to the North Island, carrying on farming in the Taranaki district, and he also established a drapery business at Feilding, before taking up more farms at Te Arolia West, prior to removing to Birkdale. He was .a good shot in his day, and during his association with the Gore Rifle Volunteers, won that company's gold medal and cup for rifle shooting, besides the silver medal for the best shot in Southland and the gold medal for tho best shot in the South Island. Throughout his life ho had been a constant social worker and had assisted in musical work.
Mr. and Mrs. Wood celebrated their golden wedding in July, 1927. Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, one son, Mr. William George Wood, of Birkdale, and six daughters, Mesdames William Stevenson, of Gore, Robert Swan, of Haw era, A. A. Garvey, o-f llukuhia, Norman McIndoe, of Hamilton, Wilfred Morris, of Auckland, and Miss Jean M. Wood, of Birkdale. There are 21 grandchildren aiul also a great granddaughter.
