WOOL LEVY OPPOSED.
MEAT BOARD FUNDS WANTED
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
GISBORNE, this day.
The Poverty Bay Farmers' Union on Saturday decided to support the principle of wool research, but to oppose the proposed levy of threepence a bale to finance it, the opinion being expressed that a surplus of £100,000 held by the Meat Board should be called upon.
Mr. J. C. Field remarked that many farmers were not receiving threepence a bale from wool themselves. On the other hand, they had provided an annual levy for the Meat Board, which now had a surplus of £100,000. Mr. F. S. Bowen: No one would object to threepence a bale to improve the wool, but when it is to be used only for semi-political purposes we can do without it. Several other speakers urged the value of research, but the general opinion was that the Meat Board should be made to release some of its accumulated funds.
