AUCKLAND AMATEURS. FIXTURES. Saturday, July B.—ll|-Mlle Handicap. Sunday, July 'J. —Club Kun to -Mercer, New market, 0 a.m.
The Auckland Club was fairly well represented in last Saturday's centre race. Roy Arvidson (4.0), the first Auckland Club rider home, did well to finish in tenth position. This rider is only in his first season of road racing and considering that this race was his longest to date, his performance was nothing short of remarkable. In recording -lb. 58m 48s, he became the club's second fastest rider and the fifth fastest rider in the race.
A. Keith (10.30), the third member of this club's team, gave a very creditable performance, to clock 2h Sin 255. He was with the winner until just before the concrete, where he found the pace a little too hot, but continued to the finish to claim eleventh position. This rider, a valuable acquisition from the now defunct Tamaki Club, has only raced three times this season, but with a little competitive racing should soon gain pride of place. W. Barry (13.0) rode his usual solid race, only tiring over the last few miles. This rider has been unfortunate in having smashed his bike a few weeks ago and so not being able to get any real training for quite a considerable time, that alone contributing to his inability to go the pace'. The biggest thrill of the day was when the two scratch men, Les. Dwight and G. Patrick, sprinted for time honours. Les. led out, but was not allowed to have things all his own way, for Gordon Patrick came up very fast in the last few yards to just fail to get there by a bare tyre. Tliis last race was Patrick's best' effort this season and he seems to be striking form now, so that their next clash will be looked for eagerly. A few words must be said for those unlucky riders, Webster and Speight. Webster was riding comfortably in a handy position when he crashed and injured his hip, while Speight also seemed to have a great chance when he punctured. The club has been offered a trophy to be given to the rider. who gains the most points for attendance at the gymnasium, one point each night; club runs, one point; club meetings, one point; new members, two points, and nomination in centre races, three points. The points are to count from July 1 to October 31.
The.Auckland Amateur Cycle Club will decide an lli-mile race at Te Atatu next Saturday, starting at 2.30 p.m. Handicaps declared:—G. Patrick, scr; R. Taylor, R. Arvidson, 455; W. Barry, C.
