GAME IN HAWKE'S BAY.

OVER 300 I'LAYERS THERE. The secretary of the Hawkc's Bay Rugby League, Mr. H. C. Nicholls, was ill Auckland at the week-end. He said that up till Friday:—"We had 310 registered players, comprised in eight senior, live junior, tour third grade and three fourth grade teams. On Tuesday evening we decided to invite by newspaper advertisement, any footballers desiring to have a friendly game on Thursday—the half-holiday at Napier—to attend at Pandora Point, where the Ahuriri Club and Referees' Association would make arrangements for play. To our surprise we were able to stage two fine games, and about 40 players had to be stood aside. It is an illustration of the favour being won by the code in Hawkc's Bay." Mr. Nicholls is a native of Paeroa. but for many years was a well-known builder in Auckland. He was prominently identified with racing, owning gallopers, trotters and pacers. He had a stud farm and a private racing track at "White Lodge," Henderson. Amongst his best horses were Tressillon, with which he won three country cups at Rotorua, Ohinemuri and Kawakawa. besides several handicap events. His best pacer was Nelson Tnsker, and others were King Capitalist. Bill Carbine, old Huon Grattan, and De Why. He has always taken a keen interest in Rugby League, and was president and later patron of the athletic club, now defunct.
