LAND SCHEME.

WAIKATO SOCIETY. SELECTION OF DIRECTORS. PRELIMINARY PLANS MADE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. Preliminary plans for putting into operation the scheme of the ANaikato Luml Settlement Society were made at' the first meeting of directors yesterday at Hamilton. The sehemo was originated and organised by Mr. D. Y. Bryant, of Hamilton, with the object of placing unemployed relief workers on the land. To finance the scheme, a nucleus lurid of just over £20,000 has. been subscribed. The Auckland Savings Bank donated £10.000, and this was supplemented by il 10,->T — which was raised by public subscription, mostly in the Auckland province. The directors selected were: Messrs. Jf. V'alder (Hamilton), J. J. Kyburn (Ohaupoj, «/. T. Johnston (To Awaliiutu), I!. A. Candy (Ngarua), H. D. Caro (Hamilton), 1). V. Bryant (Hamilton), and Dr. 11. K*. Annett (Matangi). The selection was made by Mr. Br\ant after consulting the Auckland Savings Bank. It was his object to strike a balance between business and farming interests, and each of those appointed has been successful in his own sphere. In future seven members will be elected at each aniniiil meeting. Of these, two will retire in rotation and be eligible for re-election.

A commit Leu to make recommendations to the board in regard to the selection of land for settlement was also appointed at the meeting. It comprised '.Messrs. Bryant, Eyburn, Johnston, Candy and Dr. Annett.

Mr. Bryant expressed his sincere thanks to" the directors of the Savings Bank and members of the public who, by their generous support, liacl made it possible to put the scheme under way. ]t was announced that a communication had been received from the Unemployment Board agreeing to pay the men engaged on development work the same rate of wages as they would receive under the Xo. 5 scheme in Hamilton.

In older to place the scheme on a business footing the society, which has been incorporated, will be registered as a charitable trust under the Religious. Charitable and Educational Trusts Act, 1903.

The objects of the society include the purchase and acquisition of land, stock and chattels for the purpose of the settlement on the land of unemployed and indigent persons; to supervise the breaking in of the land until the land is finally allocated and title given to the individual owners, to borrow money on the security of mortgage debentures, to buy implements, manures and farm requisites, and generally conduct farming operations; to sell or otherwise dispose of the land, stock and chattels; and to train and instruct the applicants.

Mr. Valder, who is lion, secretary and treasurer of the Land Settlement Society, is district governor of Rotary, chairman of the Hamilton Welfare League, and chairman of directors of Ellis and Burnnnd, Ltd. The other business man oh-the directorate, Mr. Caro, is deputy-Mayor of Hamilton. Dr. Annett is a well-known authority 011 farming, and was formerly a member of the Indian Civil Service. Mr. Rybnrn is a farmer and chairman of the Waikato Hospital Board. There are two other farmers 011 the board of directors, Mr. Johnston, who is chairman of the To Awamutu Power Board, and Mr. Candy.
