RATING PROBLEM.
EAST COAST CONFERENCE.
' LEVIKS OX CHOWN LANDS. (By Telegraph. — Press .\s-oi-ln:inn.t WAIUOA. Sawrtlav. A conference of delegates of local rating authorities from East Cape to Woodvilje was held here to-day for the purpose of bringing before members of Parliament tlie desperate eond'tions which rating authorities now face. Tlio following resolutions were carried:—"That all occupied Crown lands, including lands being farmed by the Crown, be ratable for all,rates. "That statutory provisions for the collection of rates in respect to lands owned or occupied by private persons be applicable to such Crown lands. , "That all rates levied on lands mortgaged to the Crown and any of its Departments be collectable in the same manner and with the same statutory powers as rates levied on lands rnortgaged by private persons. "That a local body shall have the right to set off against moneys owing to the Crown or any of its Departments all rates owing to the local body in respect to Crown lands or lands mortgaged to the Crown or any of its Departments." The conference further decided to circularise all Parliamentarians on the above lines and a deputation of live members . was appointed to proceed to Wellington with a view to placing the position before the heads of the Government.
