£500 DONATION.
LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD. The Lyttelton Harbour Board decided recently to make a donation of £500 to the big appeal for the relief of distress which has been launched by the j.Christcliurch Businessmen's Committee. "This is altogether an extraordinary appeal," said Mr. H. Holland, M.P., when the matter came before the board, "and we must do something extraordinary. I do not think that £500 would be too much for this body to give. I move that that sum be granted, at the rate of £100 a month for five months. The position is desperate where the unemployed are concerned. Distress is acute, and it behoves everyone to help." Mr. W. J. Walter, in seconding the motion, said that the board would be doing a great thing if it gave substantially. "Why not give £1000 straight away?" asked Mr. H. T. Armstrong. "It would have a great moral effect if this local body started the ball rolling with a big donation. No local body is better able to afford the money." It was decided to make the £500 donation, and to consider other appeals if they were made. Mr. H. Holland said that there would be no difficulty in obtaining sanction for the grant.
