SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Mrs. M. Hardy, of Mount Eden, gave a farewell party in lionour of her sisters, Misses Florence and Betty McLellan, prior to their departure on the Monterey to spend the winter months at .Apia as the guests of Mrs. M. Andrews. * * * * There was a large audience at the studio of Miss Vera Fielder, Newton, on Thursday, when two plays were produced under her direction, "The Maid of France" and "The Proposal." Mr. Peter Dawson, well known for his dramatic stage work, gave a number of costume recitals, including Mare Antony's oration over Caesar, "Orange Blossom" (a Chinese tragedy), "The Sphinx and the] Woman," and " A Gentleman of France."

An instructive talk was given by Mrs. Ironside .it the Women's Progress Club on Wednesday afternoon at the Ilighci Thought Temple, Wellington Street. The subject was "The Vitamins of the Mind." arid dealt with the various attributes that were ncccssary to ensure a successful life in these difficult days of change and uncertainty. The Temple quartet played "Swing Song" and "At Eventide," and Mrs. Butler sang a solo, '"Just a Song at Twilight." Afternoon tea was.served at the close of the meeting.

An enjoyable time was spent on Wednesday evening, when the Thames Girls' Club held an At Home in the Druids' Hall, Newton. A largo number of members and friends were present, and dancing was indulged in. Tho committee members present were: Mrs. P. McGregor, president, and Mesdamcs Aitken, Stubbing, Cordes, Davicson, Andrews, Mcpherson, Taylor, Nichols, and Misses Aitken, Gillespio and McGregor. ••• ' • The Mount Roskill branch of the League of Mothers celebrated its fifth birthday 011 Wednesday, when Mrs. B. Bates presided. A feature of the afternoon was a birthday cake on which flickered five candles in blue and gold, the league's colours, these same colours being used to good effect in the icing and decoration. Tho cake had been made by Mrs. T. Irvine, vice-president of the branch, and one of the members, Mrs. Chester, did the icing. The speakers for tho wero Mrs. Hamilton, the first president, her successor, Mrs. -Allen and the Rev. P. S. Smallfield. Elocutionary items were rendered by Mrs. AVatson. Afternoon tea brought a happy meeting to a close, the hostesses being Mesdamcs Bush, Coles and Cullen.
