N.Z. TOURING TEAM.

FIRST MATCH IN SYDNEY.

COMBINATION LACKING

(From Our Own Correspondent.),

SYDNEY, May 26.

The New Zealand Soccer team made rather an unpromising start for their tour last Saturday. It is 10 years since an All Black Soccer team toured Australia, but the tradition of their prowess is still maintained, and most people expected the New Zealanders to put up a good fight against New South Wales. Unfortunately they struck a strong team and a wet day —and they have had no previous practice together. These facts are quite enough to account for the score when "time" was called—s—o against New Zealand. Before play started most peopde thought that the soft grounds would be in favour of the lighter team, and the All Blacks themselves seemed to think that the conditions would suit them. But the combination of the New South Wales men was really splendid, and their robust kicking and vigorous attacking methods gave the All Blacks very little chance of finding their feet and organising any sustained and effective counter-attack. In 1923 both matches with New South Wales were drawn, but the All Blacks will need to improve a great deal on their display of last Saturday if they mean to retrieve their fortunes, and avert further defeat. Our goal-keeper, Zuill, gave a splendid display, but the rest of the team, though individually clever, could not combine, and were seldom in position to back each other up effectively. Also the kicking of our wings, in centring the ball, was weak and inaccurate as compared with the New South Wales attack; and in actual play the All Blacks were no better than the score suggests. Happily, they have over a fortnight to prepare for the first Test at Brisbane, and no doubt they will have improved vastly by that time. The A.P.A. is extremely anxious to make the tour a success, as it will cost quite £2500 to finance it; and the All Blacks can be depended upon to provide the spectators with an attractive and thoroughly sporting Rame when they have played together for a time. REPRESENTATIVE GAME. r- '; r KING'S BIRTHDAY MATCH. Mr. A. E.- Backhouse, sole selector for the A.P.A., has selected the following team to meet the Navy in a return match on Saturday next. The players will attend at Blandford Park for practice and training on Tuesday evening at 7.30 p.m.:.— Oowie (Y.M.C.A.). H. Davis ■(Onehunga), Tnnes (Ponsonby).'Dunsmore (Thistle), Spencer (Trams), Hislop (Thistle), Skinner (Comrades). ■ , In connection with the senior programme for next Saturday, which was to have been carried through in the afternoon, a movement is on foot bv prominent club officials to have the games played in the forenoon, so as to leave supporters clear for the afternoon match.
