WELLINGTON SCARE.
EXPLOSION CAUSES FIRE. FACTORY EMPLOYEES ESCAPE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Friday. An explosion blew out a number of windows and made a hole in an asbestos roof this afternoon in a three-storey building in Frederick Street, occupied by John Dickinson and Company (N.Z.), Limited, manufacturing stationers. It occurred while a workman was engaged in soldering a metal-lined case containing sheets of xylonite. Firo broke out, but it was soon brought Under control by the fire brigade. The sound of the explosion brought a large crowd into the street. The explosion occurred on the top floor. Men were working there, and on the same floor there were a number of girls, but all escaped injury, although several of the girls suffered from shock and were sent home.
None of the machinery was damaged, and it was stated officially that the manufacturing operations of the company would not in any way be held up.
