DRAMA FESTIVAL.

NEW ZEALAND'S FIRST.

A National Drama Festival, such as Britain has known for years past, has been organised by the New Zealand branch of the British Drama League, which was formed last year under the guidance of Miss Elizabeth Blake. The various affiliated areas in the country will hold preliminary festivals in the near future, the successful "team" or society in each area having the right to compete in the National Festival, which is to be held in Wellington in September.

The Auckland festival will be held from August 28 to September 2. Miss Blako herself will act as adjudicator. To date, twelve societies nave linked up with the Auckland area, and it is expected that another dozen will have become affiliated by the end of August. These include the Little Theatre Society, tho St. Andrew's Society, the Garrick* Shakespeare Society, the Playlovers' Club the Playbox Theatre Club, the dramatic circles of the W.E.A., the Lyceum Club, the Elam School of Art, the Writers' Club and the Pen women's Club, tho Georgian Readers and Mrs. McK. Geddes' reading circle.

The aim of the promoters of the scheme is to raise the standard of production and 1 dramatic appreciation and to encourage the progressive element in the amateur theatre. The dramatic work to be offered by entrant societies must be a one-act play, not exceeding 30 minutes in performing length. Other festivals, some of which are oldestablished by comparison with Auckland, which is holding its first, will arrange their competitions to (it in with the National Drama Festival. Among these are the Southern Hawke's Bay area (at Dannevirke in July), and the South Canterbury Drama League, which will conduct its seventh annual festival from August 14-17,
