SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A meeting of the Mount Albert branch of the League of Mothers was held 011 Thursday afternoon, when Mrs. Turner, sen., presided. Madam Mabel Millie gave an inspiring address on the subject of "Women." Musical items by Mcsdames Blomfield and Harvey were given. Afternoon tea was served by the tea and hostess committee at the end of the meeting. The St. John's Anglican Social Club at Northcote held a dance in the parish hall, when the Rev. I<\ W. Wilkes and Mrs. Wilkes officiated as host and hostess. Those present included Mesdames F. C. Swinbank, J. Barrett, C. Harkin, C. Morrison, F. Newman, I. Davidson, H. Rossiter, Misses M. Finlayson, V. Casey, R. Mackenzie, Skinner, E. Holman, M. Davison, M. Evans, G. La lioche, P. Blake, L. Beechcr, P. Smith, E. Davison. A successful meeting was held in Kelvin Hall, Onehunga, on Thursday to form a ladies' branch of A.P.U.W.A. I Mr. Imsley, chairman, opened 'the meeting, and a ladies' committee was formed, with Mrs. Pickering as president, Mrs. l;. Hoddcr secretary, and "Mrs. Murdock treasurer. Pastor Thornley gave a talk, and said he was pleased to see such a large gathering of ladies so interested to help in such a time of depression. The Auckland Federation of Women's Institutes is holding an exhibition of handicraft work in Milne and Choyce's recreation room next Thursday for the members' half-yearly gathering, but during the afternoon of both Thursday and Friday it will be open to the public free. As the work done on thrift lines by the members of the institutes is very clever, "the institutes think many who are not members may care to see the exhibition. * * » * A meeting of the Auckland Home Service Association was held on Wednesday. Mrs. J. T. F. Mitchell, president, welcomed home Mesdames Martin, Ross and W. R. Fee from an extended holiday abroad. Mrs. St. Clair Inglis reported that several members attended the annual meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. It . was decided to co-operate in a pratieal ; way. A morning tea was lield at Milne and Choyce's Tudor room on Friday, when a number of girl friends entertained Miss Hilda Morse, of the Xative Affairs Department, who is resigning front the Civil Service. Sardelic, Richmond Street, Thames, on Wednesday, to celebrate the 21st birthday of her son, Mr. Wallace Jeffs. The rooms were decorated with, coloured streamers and bowls of chrysanthemums. Competitions and games were enjoyed. Those present included: Mesdames C. Payne, Gray (Tuvua), C. The bridge prize was won by Mrs. Patton; progressive "500," Mrs. Thompson; hidden number, Mrs. Winter.
