Major-General Sinclair-Burgees left for the South by the Limited last night. Dr. and Mrs. G. M. Whyte, of Hastings, are ui Auckland at the Giand Hotel. Mr. F. Main, of Napier, returned to Auckland by the lonic from London this morning. Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Wesley, of Sydney, are visiting Auckland and are at Hotel Cargen. Lieut. R. 11. Ryan returned to Auckland by the Monterey this morning to rejoin H.M.s. Diomede. . Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., of Marton, has been appointed chairman of the Railways Appeal Board. Mr. A. W. Wheeler, general manager for the Union Steamship Company, Ltd., left by the Monowai yesterday for Sydney. Mr. D. W. Mitchell, departmental manager of Watson Bros., Limited, Palmerston North, is retiring after 2b years' service with the company. Mr. and Mrs. E. Clarke, of Melbourne, who have been fishing in New Zealand, left Auckland by the Monterey this afternoon. Mr. J. D. C. Duncan, of Rotorua, president of the Auckland Society of Arts, is in Auckland with Mrs. Duncan. They are at the Station Hotel. The Hon. A. A. Wright, acting Colonial Secretary of Fiji, with his wife and family, arrived this week for a short holiday in the Dominion. Mr. Stanley S. Scott, managing director of Berlei (N.Z.), Ltd., passed through Auckland to-day en route to Australia in continuation of his world tour. ' Mr. Gordon J. Williams, an associate of the Otago School of Mines, and formerly holder of the science travelling scholarship of New Zealand University, has been awarded the diploma of the Imperial College of Science, London, and the William Frecheville prize with a special grant from the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for his researches on the ore deposits of La Zarza, Huelva, Spain. He lias since been appointed through the Colonial Office to the geological survey of the goldfields of British Guiana.
