RAINBOWS.

Causes and forms of rainbows were explained by Mr. E. G. Jones at a meeting of the Auckland Astronomical Society last evening. He said that the colours were due to the dispersion, of the white sunlight by the water particles in the air, in the same way as a prism disperses sunlight into the colours of the spectrum. Ordinarily a rainbow was never larger than a semi-circle, said Mr. Jones, but from the tops of mountains a fuller portion of the circle was sometimes seen, while at times a full circle was seen from aeroplanes. Rainbows were sometimes caused, too, by a bright moon, but in such cases the colours were' very pale and the lunar rainbow appeared as a whitish arc.
