ARTS BALL.

BRILLIANT SCENE. There was a brilliant scene last evening at the Peter Pan Cabaret when the Auckland Society of Arts held its annual balL The dancing floor was gay with every form of romantic costume, dresses of all nations and queer birds, with and without feathers, and in the grand march some well-thought-out ideas were shown. The guests were received by the president, Dr. J. D. Campbell Duncan, assisted by Mrs. Duncan, and the latter also presented the prizes. Dr. Duncan represented a gladiator and Mrs. Duncan was an Eastern princess. A remarkable act was the Eastern set entitled "The Sacrifice of the Lotus Flower," arranged and performed by Mrs. Destree Hansen. This was a well-deserved prize winner and carried first honours, the latter being received with acclamation. The set was a shining dragon and from its huge mouftli came two devil dancers, Misses P. Robson and Myrtle Young, a Chinese god and the sacrifice, which part was taken by Mrs. Hansen. The Chinese emperor was played by Mr. Erie Long. Two sets of wooden soldiers were excellently carried out by Miss Altliea Parker, Miss Rosemary Waller, Miss Barbara Pierce, Miss. Audrey Hutchinson, Messrs. Peter Nathan, Graham Brown Douglas, Chris Parker and R. I Jeffries. The smaller set was Miss Diana Harris, Miss Annette George, Mrs. P. William-Powlett, Captain J. Tweedie, Lieutenant Michael Hogan and Commander P. William-Powlett. The architectural students' pierrot set were: Misses Kathleen Bull, Cicely Butcher, Margot Trafford, Nancy Northcroft, Messrs. L. Morrison, Ralph Pickinere, H. Claridge and B. Bartleet. The Elam School of Art was represented by many humorous characters: Miss Vida Vickers, white and black niuon; Miss Zilma Spry, a Spanish lady; Miss Joan Farquliar, a medieval lady in blue; Miss Betty Banks, green flowered georgette and cape; Miss Zoe Hamilton, as Trilby; Miss Rashell and Mrs. Chamdos, as two little red devils.

Mr. Murray White, Persian; Miss J. Burn-Murdocli, Persian lady; Miss Joan Lawry, Japanese lady; Mr. Jack Crippen, Spaniard; Mr. Gilbert Nicols, Mexicanj Mr. Donovan, pirate; Miss Bubara Goodwin and Mr. Colin Rabe, as white and brown harlequins; Miss P. Johnson, Spanish lady; Miss Alva Grant, pink frilled glace silk; Miss Amber Kraijevich, pirate; Miss June Holmes, Eastern dancer. Another prize winning set was the group entitled all nations. They were: Mrs. Alan Dignan, Bulgarian lady; Mrs. J. H. Wood, Dutch; Mrs. W. EL Gummer, early English lady; Miss Irene Isaacs, Greek; Miss Betty Buttle, Turkish; Miss Helen Somerville, Italian; Miss Marjorie Mappin, Hungarian; Mr. Anthony Fell, ! Roumanian; Mr. N. H. Gummer, early I English; Miss Joy Moody, Alsatian; Miss Jean Wilson, Spanish; Mr. Charles Wilson, Spaniard; Mr. Garth Griffith, Greek; Mr. D. Somerville, modern; Miss Betty Buttle, Turkish; Miss Betty Goldie, Swiss peasant; Mr. J. Carpenter, Tyrolean; Mr. J. Thompson, Turk; Dr. J. H. Wood, Dutchman; Mr. Alan Dignan, Arab sheik; Mr. Russell Giesin, Mexican. An amusing set was arranged by Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Fenton, called "Mr. Johnny Walker's Bird and Animal Mart." The characters included crowing hens, different coloured parrots, canaries, which wcro in wired cages, and a box of pedigree puppies. In this set were: Mrs. Fenton, Comipander and

Mrs. Fletcher, Dr. Elaine Gurr, Miss Margaret O'Connor, Miss Marjorie Tiarks, Mies Egerton, Miss Coutts, Messrs. Eric Brown, Colin Coutts, McLean, Maurice Yock, Lloyd and Rex Warren. Another amusing set was made up of modern and old-fashioned schoolgirls arranged by the Misses Burgos Watson. Taking part were: Misses Mary and Elizabeth Burges Watson, Commander and Mrs. F. H. Carliill, Lieutenant and Mrs. T. S. B. Winch, Lieutenant Watford, Miss Marjorie Suter and Lieutenant R. H. Courage. The prizewinners were: Best ladies' costume, Mrs. H. J. Kellihcr, as Catherine of Russia; best gentleman's costume, Mr. H. S. Roper, as Robin Hood; most original ladies' costume, Miss Lambert, as Mickey Mouse; most original gentleman's costume, Mr. Jarman, as Home Brew; national set/ Mrs. Alan Dignan; and the Dragon set for originality. Another original set was composed of Mrs. Richard Airey and Lieutenant R. H. Courage dressed as the Russian Ogpus. During the evening the costumes and sets were judged for prizes by Mr. W. J. Crowther, Mrs. W. J. Napier and Mrs. Harry Mowbray. Fancy dresses were worn by Mrs. E. B. Gunson, as Anna May Wong; Dr. E. B. Gunson, a coster king; Mr. H.
