LOCAL BODIES.

HENDERSON TOWN BOARD. The Henderson Town Board held its usual monthly meeting on Tuesday night. Mr. 11. Norcross presided. Gratia Bridge.—ln reporting on the Oratia stream bridge, the engineer, Mr. R. F. Worley, stated that the period of maintenance commenced when the bridge was opened for traffic on March 31, and the 25 per cent retention money was now payable. He was, however, withholding the certificate until certain minor work was completed. The consolidation of the approaches was being done satisfactorily. With the advent; of wet weather it would proceed more rapidly. He enclosed a letter from the Auckland town clerk which 1 stated that it was understood that the details of any extra work on the bridge were to be submitted to Mr. Farram and himself before it was proceeded with. This had not been done, but he had no doubt the work was necessary, and he would in due course recommend the council to contribute its proportion of the cost. Leave of Absence.—The town clerk, Mr. E. Greenslade, was granted one month's leave of absence, and Mr. A. Harrison, one time assistant town clerk of Auckland City, was appointed in his place for that period.

HENDERSON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Owing to the stoppage of all subsidies and the reduction of the school grant (approximately 12 per cent) caused by the raising of the school age, the Henderson School Committee has found it necessary to use hitherto untried avenues for raising funds for carrying on its work. A social, dance, and card tournament was held in the Town Hall. The chairman, Mr. J. A. Holt, presided, and intimated that this year tho Henderson school would attain its sixtieth anniversary, and the committee considered that the event should be celebrated in a manner worthy of the occasion. A meeting of residents would be held in the first week in June, and committees would be formed for the purpose of furthering tho project. The announcement was received with applause. BIRKENHEAD BOftOUGH COUNCIL. The Birkenhead Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. G. Mills presiding. Deputy Mayor and Committees.—Mr. G. B. Hewson was appointed deputy mayor, and committees were appointed as follows: —Finance: Tho Mayor (chairman), Messrs. A. Hadfield, H. A. Campbell, C. E. Campbell. Works: Messrs. G. B. Hewson (chairman), P. Morris, P. Dennen, H. A. Campbell. Parks: Messrs. 11. R. Hayinan (chairman), J, Macdonald, W. Hall, H. A. Campbell. Fire Board representatives: Messrs. Ilayman and C. E. Campbell. North Shore Water Board representative: The Mayor. Delegates to the Suburban Local Bodies' Association: Messrs. Hayman and Macdonald. Band committee: Messrs. Macdonald, Hall, and Hayman. Mayor's Honorarium.—The Mayor's honorarium was fixed at £100, less 10 per cent. Council Meetings.—Despite a motion by the Mayor that the council should meet once every three weeks, it was decided that the meetings should take place as at present, on alternate Wednesdays. The time of meeting was changed from 7 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Roll of Honour. —Messrs. R. R. Hayman and H. A. Campbell were appointed to confer with the local Ex-Servicemen's Association concerning a roll of honour. Birlcdale Library.—The council donated £1 1/ to the Birkdale Library fund. Birkenhead Unemployed.—The council agreed to recognise the Birkenhead Unemployed Association as the representatives of the relief workers in the borough. Bus Mayor, Mr. G. Mijls, and Messrs. P. Morris, G. B. Hewson, and A. Hadfield were appointed a committee to discuss with the bus company the < improvement of services.
