FOOTWEAR SUPPLY.

AUCKLAND OFFER. PLAN OF DISTRIBUTION. LETTER TO MINISTER. A letter has been sent to the Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton, on behalf of over 20 Auckland retail stores, offering to supply footwear for the Unemployment Board at a total cost of 10 per cent on the selling price. The letter to the Minister says:— "During your recent visit to Auckland a deputation from the boot and shoe retailers waited upon Mr. Bromley in connection with tltc scheme for supplying unemployed workers with footwear. At the close of the interview Mr. Bromley was good cnoug'i to state that if the retailers could formulate a plan of distribution whereby the footwear couldbe supplied to the wearer at a cost not exceeding 10 per cent, he would favourably consider the proposition.

"The retailers concerned have shops throughout Auckland city and suburbs, and at Otahuhu, Hamilton and Wliangarei, and we suggest the unemployed would be better catered for if they could obtain supplies at these stores than if they had all to call at one central depot. Further, it would enable us to retain our present staff in employment,, which is being done now only with great difficulty. "We have given careful consideration to Mr. Bromley's offer, and now make the following proposal: —We are prepared to accept, stock and distribute the footwear now being manufactured I for the board through any of our I stores, giving the board the services of our trained staffs, our shop equipment and expert supervision, at a total cost of 10 per cent of the selling price. "Unemployed with vouchers from the board would lie able to present them at an3 r of our stores, and would receive expert attention and correct fitting. We are prepared to co-operate with the board as much as possible, and meanwhile suggest: —(1) That all our shops be supplied with stock; (2) that we supply the footwear called for in exchange for a vouchor from the board; (3) that at periods convenient to the board we render statements showing the footwear distributed, and receive the board's cheque; (4) that any footwear that iannot be called for we dispatch to the people concerned, paying all charges, which the board would refund to us; (5) that at stated periods we render a statement of footwear received and distributed and stocks still held. "The above outline' could, of course, be altered to fit in with any system the board desired to institute."
