CROWN AND RATES.
MANUKAU COUNCIL'S VIEWS. COUNTIES' ASSOCIATION REMIT. Though the chairman of the Manukau County Council, Mr. F. M. Waters, felt 'diffident about incurring the expense, the council members felt that Mr. Waters should represent the council at the conference of the New Zealand Counties' Association, which is to commence on July 25. The matter was discues'ed at the meeting this morning.
The chairman will bring forward a remit at the conference dealing with the Crown and the question of payment of rates. The remit read: "That all local bodies levying and collecting rates be urged to approach their local members of Parliament with a view to having the present law relating to rating amended in so far as it affects properties mortgaged to, leased, or rented by the Crown, with the object of giving local bodies power to collect rates on such lands and deal with the same in a matter similar to privately owned land/ .
