SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A five hundred tournament and card party in aid of the Henderson Catholic Church was held in ■ the new Convent school' on Thursday night. There was a good attendance, and the winners were: Mrs. Hallas 1, Miss M. Salisbury 2; Mr. M. Lucan 1, Mr. H - . B. McCormick. 2.

A card party and five hundred tournament, the proceeds of which are to augment the funds of the Henderson' Bowling and Croquet Clubs, was held in the Foresters' Hall on Thursday night, between 30 and 40 persons being present. The winners were: Mrs. Dawson 1, Mrs. Devlin 2; Mr. T. Garelja 1, Mr. A. C. Pook 2.

Trinity Methodist Church, Kingsland, Ladies' Guild held a pleasant social afternoon in the Jubilee Hall on Thursday to welcome tre Rev. Mr. Werren, newly-appointed minister, and Mrs. Werren to the guild. A programme of music, song and story was presented by Mesdames T. Clark and Barton, Misses Doris Messrs and Davidson, with Miss Ryan at the piano. A ring competition was won by Miss Messer and Mrs. J. Ryan. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. C. H. Page and Mrs. Garland, when Mrs. T. Hodgson said a few words of welcome to the guests of the afternoon and M?.ss Betty Ryan presented Mrs. Werren with a bouquet of autumn flowers. Mr. Werren responded on behalf of Mrs. Werren and himself and wished the ladies every success.

A successful fancy dress social was held on Saturday evening in the Onehunga Methodist Hall under the auspices of the senior Y.M.B.C. Prizes were won by Misses E. and M. Horn and Messrs. H. Clegg, L. Pople, and A. Jackson. An entertainment followed in the form of movies taken at the Bible class Easter camp and the presentation of a darkie act. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought an enjoyable evening to a close.

The Springleigh Social Club held another of its social evenings on Saturday in the bowling pavilion in Allendale Road. Among those present were: Mesdames Hutt, W. Sharp, W. Hicks, Linton, Reston, Brigham, Lenihan, Healy (Hamilton), Menzies, Park, Mcßae, Smith, Quinlan, Lord, Tyler, Webster, Poole, Coudron, Misses Ellery, A. Barlow, B. Roebeck, R. Barlow, J. Rocbeck, M. Barrio, M. Hamlon, Smith, G. Mearns, Miller, Silcock, Long, V. Blake, Beavis, Overton, Bailley, Herbert, and Scott.

The Northcote Co-operative Social Club held an enjoyable gathering in the Parish Hall on Saturday evening. Songs were given by Mr. F. C. Swinbank, and recitations by Master Desmond, Hurley. Among those present were: Mesdames W. Rackett, M. S. Davis, C. L. Duke, A J. A. Hurley, W. F. Ward, R. G. Holland, W. P. Roberts, F. W. Mitchell, A. Clow, S. Osborne, W. Copeland, N. R. Shorter, J. Gilfoyle, A. Stewart, P. May, R. Moore, T. Howland, G. W. Simpson, A. Warren, G. Duckworth, F. Woodward, F. C. Swinbank, Misses T. Weeks, C. Low, N. Hutchinson, L. Gilfoyle.

The Henderson Toung Women's League held a social and dance in the Town Hall in aid of the forthcoming queen carnival. Among those present were: Mesdames Clark, Bussey, Cranwell, Reanney;. Butler, Sandford, Walker, Walsh, and Dodgson, Misses R. Bussey (Henderson queen), J. Chappell, K. Moore, O. Yelas (Valley queen), S. Colebrook, J. Bussey, S. Simmonds, J. Adams, P. and N. Massey, B. A number of interested friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Teasdale, Kitchener Road, Milford, on Friday afternoon to meet the Rev. David Calder, 8.A., Dominion secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, Wellington. Mr. Calder gave a deeply interesting address, every word pregnant with inspiration and help. A pleasant social time was spent afterwards. Among those present were: Canon and Mrs. Young, Rev. and Mrs. E. S. Emmet, Rev. and Mrs. Morgan Richards, Rev. Hailey Trill, Miss Agnes Young, Mr. and Mrs. Teasdale, Mesdames Lewis, Newrich, Algie, Sherley, Clouston, Mathews, Miss C. S. Morton and Miss Rushbrooke.

On Wednesday the members of Mount Wellington Croquet Club entertained the following: Mesdames Keesing, Bagley, Oswald, Finch, Anderson, Gillies, Hunter, Christmas, Richmond, Chapman, Miss BrOwn. Owing to showery weather progressive 500 was played. Afternoon tea was served when the president, Mrs. Kay, welcomed the guests and presented the trophies won by Mrs. ileesing (first) and Mrs. Finch (second), and the consolation prizes to Mrs. Hunter and Mrs. Oswald. Mesdames Bagley, Gillies and Keesing thanked the members and complimented them on the good feeling which, existed amongst members, and wished the. club every success in the future.

The Otahuhu Old-Time Dance Club continued their series of old-time benefit dances last Saturday evening in the Public Hall, Otahuhu. This was the most successful dance of the season. A feature of the evening was the semi-final of the waltzing competition, when the judges, Messrs. F. Arnold and Hedger, chose four couples to compete in the final. There were 30 couples who entered this competition. .There were also two Monte Carlo waltzes, the first being won by Miss Ellery and Mr. Graham, the second by Mr. arid Mrs* F. Smith. Extras were played by Mrs. Parker on the accordion and Misses Rafferty and M. Tucker piano. Supper arrangements were carried out by Mesdamee Parker, Markwick and Miss Briggs, assisted by the committee. Among those present were: Mesdames Craig, Stokes, Markwick, Parker, Taggart, Wilkinson, E. Stokes, F. Arnold, Carter, Whiter, Lindner, Cramond, Whittle, Rafferty, F. Smith, Wrav, Page, B. Taylor, Carson, Bell.

A delightful dance was given on Friday evening by Mrs. 11. A. Horrocks, of Rangitoto View Road, St. Helier's. The dancing hall was gaily decorated with coloured streamers, and the supper tables were graced with bowls of violets and slender crystal vases of gold flowers. Mrs. Horrocks received the guests in a Nile green georgette. Miss Noel Horrocks assisted her mother in a primrose organdie. Among those present were: Misses B. Williams, Fay Rhind, Trixie Robinson, Beth Swanston, Diana Hill, P. Whitten, B. Whitten, Joyce Holloway, C. Nicol, Joyce Kcy-Joncs, Dorothy Fairburn, Gay Wilson, Elizabeth Donald, E. and M. Frater, M. Tewsley, Joan Hellaby, June Lee, Isobel Carr, Lorna Finlayson, Margaret Ewcn, and Joan Horrocks.

The musical circle of the Overseas Club met in -the clubrooms, Queen's Arcade, last Wednesday evening, with Madame Aileen Johns, the convener, in the chair. In commemoration of the centenary of his birth, the evening was devoted to the works of Brahms, and a very interesting talk on his life was given by Mrs. Anne Morris. The following programme was then presented: A group of pianoforte soli, "Ballade in D Minor," "Ballade in D Major," and "Cappricio in B Minor," played with fine feeling by Mrs. Anne Morris; a sonata (Op. 108), played as a duet for piano and violin, by Mrs. Anne Morris and Mr. Wilfred Morris; a pianoforte solo, "Rhapsodic" (Op. 79), by Miss Joyce Heniett; and in conclusion, two songs, "The Blacksmith" and "A Lullaby" were rendered by Miss Olive Worger-Thomas. A dainty supper brought an enjoyable evening to close.

The Domain Tea Kiosk was the scene of a birthday party given by Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Kendon, of One Tree Hill, on Friday evening, in honour of the coming-of-age of their daughter, Miss Nancy Kendon. Gay decorations and a blazing fire made the rooms very attractive and the time passed pleasantly with games and competitions, interspersed with musical items, these being rendered by Mr. and Mrs. S. Clinton Williams, Miss Clare Armour, L.T.C.L., Miss D. Blomfield and Mr. Rex Goldsmith. A humorous recitation was given by Mr. Neville Turner. During supper a large birthday cake, made like a casket with a golden key, symbolic of the entrance to womanhood, was cut by the guest of honour. In a brief speech Mr. T. R. Page, on behalf of the assembled company, conveyed birthday greetings and wishes for future happiness to Miss Kendon. Those present included Mesdames Kendon, sen., Chas. Blomfield, S. Clinton Williams, B. Williams, and Misses E. C. Kendon, C. H. Armour, P. Armour, G. Binnie, D. Blomfield, H. B. Fearon, B. Hargreaves, V. C. Hertelet, T. Jenkins, M. Kendon, B. Litherland, J.
