SATURDAY'S GAMES. DIFFICULT WINTER CONDITIONS. CLUB COMPETITIONS CONTINUED. With frequent showers—come of which were accompanied by hail—and a strong wind to contend with, conditions for golf on Saturday were trying. It was not surprising that the fine performances that have marked the play so far during the season were not sustained. At Middlemore the captain's tourney was commenced, and the entry of 122 necessitated the matches being played in fourballs. This is always a keenly contested event, and the winner is at this stage hard to suggest. At Maungakiekie the second round of the Kingsweli Shield was played, and the bogey was too hard a proposition for the field, the best card of the day being that of C. Jarman, 3 down. At North Shore the longer handicap players were again in the forefront in a medal competition. M. E. Thompson was the outstanding senior with a net 70, but six players had better net cards. The Coltman Cup was commenced at Akarana, and the Taylor Bowl was advanced another stage at Titirangi. A notable victory was that of E. T. Harold over H. Brinsden. Two players, G. Jones and W. Paton, tied in a bogey competition at Titirangi, all square, a good performance under the conditions, but at Akarana a bogey contest, played in conjunction with the Cup, resulted in 2 down being the best card. It was returned by W. Greenbank. AUCKLAND CLUB. The record entry of 122 players was received for the captain's tourney, which commenced on Saturday at Middlemore.
