THE NEW ZEALAND LEGION.
Your correspondent E. Satchell has intro-
duced the names of Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini to support the suggestion lie is endeavouring to convey to the public, that the New Zealand Legion is working for a dictatorship. We do not propose to discuss this absurd pretension. We may point out to Mr. Satchell and those of his way of thinking, however, that Parliamentary Government, as it functions at present, is, in the final analysis, more or less of a dictatorship. Political parties are ruled by a caucus; each of them_ has an electoral machine; their representation committees, if they do not nominate candidates, practically do so by placing their official imprimatur on the candidates of whom they approve. In other Words, politics in New Zealand, as in other countries, is dominated by the political machine. The electors are told that they must vote for a certain candidate in order to ensure that their .political party will be returned at the polls and the Government saved from disaster. It is the object of the legion to eliminate this factor in our political life and to educate the electors to use their intelligence and independence of judgment in the selection of the men who are to serve them in local and general .govern-, ment. MEMBER OF THE LEGION.
