WORLD CONFERENCE.

A STRONG PROTEST. (To the Editor.) If the suggested trip Homo of our two political leaders does not call for a- very strong protest it will show how apathetic the people of this Dominion have become. In the first place, what is the use of a High Commissioner being stationed in London if he is not capable of attending to such matters, as the proposed conference? No one who knows Sir Thomas Wilford will doubt for one moment his ability to act with even far greater benefit to the Dominion than either of the two proposed delegates. One also may ask has our experience 0 of these conferences proved worth the thousands of pounds they have cost? Has Ottawa proved worth the money it cost? No one knows really what it did cost. And now we are to have a' repetition of the same extravagance, only in duplicate, because it not only means ;the two right honourable gentlemen going, but a retinue with them, and at a time when we are all being preached to about economy and self-sacrifice. What right have our leaders to postpone the session of Parliament till October when before that a serious crisis' may possibly arise? BONTE. It is reported that both Mr. Forbes and Mr. Coates will go to London for this conference. Should this eventuate it will be a waste of public money. Sir Thomas Wilford could represent this Dominion _at the conference with ability and dignity. Why an unwarranted huge expense to get less? Mr. Forbes was only recently .Home, and it was confessed that that conference was a fiasco. Mr. Coates was more recently at Ottawa. The story of subsequent high exchange and virtual repudiation is a sad one. The two leaders of the Government will do well to take a more serious view of the "■eneral position of the Dominion and relievo taxpayers rather than add to their burden bv unforgivable further waste of public funds. y ; * A. J. STALLWORTHY.
